What the Wind Lifted- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

A thin afternoon breeze rattled leaves against the garden fence. Leo stood beside the rusty soccer goal that leaned near the shed. An optimistic swirl of yellow and blue covered the plastic ball trapped beneath the heavy net. His dog, Patch, sniffed the ground but kept one ear toward the scene. Patch has waited beside him since lunchtime today. The wind lifted a loose corner of the net. At the same time, the ball’s weight pressed downward into damp grass. Leo wanted the ball for evening practice, yet the two forces locked it tight.

He fetched a wooden crate and tried to ascend the frame for better reach. The crate wobbled; Patch barked; Leo jumped down just before it toppled. Next, he lifted the net with both hands, but another gust drove the mesh back over the ball. His quick determination of the wind’s path gave him a different thought. Instead of fighting the air, he championed its strength. He pinned two net loops to the crate, turned the frame like a sail, and stepped aside. The wind filled the hanging mesh, yanked it upward, and dragged the heavy net off the ball. Freed, the ball rolled across the yard and struck a stone border. It then disappeared into a shallow puddle near the compost pile.

Water splashed high, muddying Leo’s shoes and soaking Patch’s paws. The lifted net billowed, slid off the crate, and draped itself over a line of seedling beans. Leo stared at the puddle; the ball bobbed just beyond arm’s length. A dragonfly skimmed the surface, its wings catching the late light. Leo stepped back from the puddle and followed the bright insect across the garden beds.

午後的薄風搖動著花園圍籬上的葉片。里歐站在倚靠工具間的生鏽足球門旁。那顆被沉重球網壓住的塑膠球上，有著鮮豔亮眼的黃藍渦紋。牠的狗帕奇嗅著地面，一隻耳朵始終朝向場景。帕奇從今天午餐後就守在里歐身邊。風掀起球網的一角。同時，球的重量把草壓得更低。里歐想在傍晚練球，但兩股力量把球牢牢夾在原地。

他搬來一只木箱，試著爬上框架以便伸手更遠。木箱搖晃，帕奇叫了一聲，里歐在箱子翻倒前跳了下來。接著，他雙手提起球網，另一陣強風卻把網子又壓回球上。他迅速判定風向，想到另一個辦法。他不再和空氣對抗，而是利用它的力量。他把兩個網圈固定在木箱上，將框架轉成一面小帆，然後退到一旁。風灌進懸空的網子，將它猛然拉起，把沉重球網扯離球面。球脫困後沿院子翻滾，撞到石頭邊，再溜進堆肥旁的淺水坑。

水花濺起，濕了里歐的鞋，也弄髒了帕奇的爪子。被扯起的球網像風袋般鼓動，滑離木箱，覆在一排豆苗上。里歐望著水坑，球在手臂之外的距離上上下下。蜻蜓掠過水面，翅膀映著傍晚的光。里歐離開水坑，跟著那隻亮閃閃的昆蟲，走向花圃深處。
