English Original

A hollow clang echoed along the awnings, and a wide metal shutter began to slide over the east gate of the urban market. Wade and Mae held a cardboard tower they had architected from scrap paper and glue; the tower tipped with every jolt of their elbows. Reused glass jars hung above them like dim lamps, small signs of sustainability among the wooden stands. They aimed to reach the gate before the shutter touched the ground, yet a train of wheeled produce carts rolled across the aisle. One cart struck a crate, sending ripe oranges spinning; momentum carried the fruit under nearby baskets and slowed every passerby.

The shutter dropped lower, rattling once more at knee height. Two gaps remained: a longer curve around stacked rugs or a narrow space beneath a still-moving spice stall. The rug path offered fewer bumps but stretched far. The gap beneath the stall promised speed and risk. Mae tucked the model close, crouched, and darted forward. Canvas brushed her shoulders; pepper dust drifted into her eyes. Wade followed, shoes skidding on scattered nuts. Friction tore the corner of his sleeve, yet they cleared the wheels before the stall bumped to a stop. A small tin box, jolted by their passage, slid from behind a sack. It creaked open against Wade’s boot and revealed dull bronze coins shaped by older technology. He scooped the box and grinned; the discovery would improve their classroom display even more than the tower. Mae’s torn cuff fluttered as she straightened. The model leaned against her knee. The shutter hovered just above the floor, its edge trembling in the air.

Translation
