English Original
Three plank-widths from the harbor wall, a low crate stood beside a tall mast section that waited for repair. A striped pier cat crouched on the crate, eyes fixed on a silver tail of fish skin dangling near a cleat. Each spring of its body pushed the crate backward a finger’s breadth along the smooth boards. At the far end of the pier a retired teacher guided a small handcart loaded with a luminous orange buoy and a coil of rope. The cart’s wooden wheel squeaked and rocked, but the teacher kept both hands on the handle and aimed for a bollard near the anchored fishing boat. Salt carried on cool air brushed the cat’s whiskers while tar from the planks left a dark shine on its paws.
A gust shifted nothing, yet movement grew. The cat launched toward its goal, paws striking the crate edge and sending it sliding. At the same moment the cart’s loose wheel hit a missing plank; the jolt threw the buoy forward. Round and slick, it gained momentum, rolled past barrels, then struck the sliding crate. The impact spun the buoy sideways and tugged the rope coil loose. Suspense filled the brief silence between collisions. The cat arched away and landed on a gangplank, tail flicking above the water. The buoy bounced once more, clipped the anchor chain, and dropped into the tide, where it floated, half-tethered by the rope now looped around the crate corner. The teacher hurried over, shaking his head at the small mystery of how paths had crossed so precisely. He knelt to test the rope; the knot held, though a scrape marked the buoy’s bright skin. A faint ripple kept circling the buoy beside the pier.
Translation
