"The funnel keeps sliding."
Grant steadied it against the brass fitting while Bea lifted the small oil can. A moderate wind rushed through the open window ledge. It tugged at the sleeve of her coat, rocking the thick liquid inside the can. The spiral staircase behind them echoed each tiny metal scrape. Below, a yacht drifted past the breakwater, its white deck flashing under the afternoon sun. Yellow light from the great lens spread across the chamber. It caught droplets of seawater that burst against the glass pane. Bea aimed carefully, yet the viscous lamp oil only oozed. Each bubble rose with reluctance before popping near the spout.
Grant braced his palm around the funnel rim while beads of saltwater formed along its edge. The spray carried by the same wind met the slow stream of oil. It scattered tiny droplets across the lantern housing. Two forces wrestled there. The thick oil stuck to the metal, but the wind-driven water washed it sideways. Bea tried to overcome the mess by tilting the can farther. The sudden shift sent a dark ribbon of oil surging forward. It splashed over the lens, then dripped toward the stone step below. Both friends froze when the bright beam bent into a crooked stripe that swept the empty sea.
With unwavering focus, Grant tucked a rag around the lens edge. He guided the funnel lower to narrow the space between liquid and glass. The closer position blocked most of the spray, and the oil started to glide in a steady column. Their earlier ambition to finish quickly faded. Now they worked in slow breaths, counting each bubble that rose inside the reservoir. When the tank finally filled, Bea eased the can back. She watched a single drop linger on the rim. A gust struck the window again. It lifted the drop into the air and spun it into mist. Spray swept the tiny spark of oil toward the swirling tide beyond the rocks.
Translation
