Warm grain of the wooden railing pressed against Sara’s palms. She fastened a broad rubber strap to it. The strap stretched across a checked cloth. She wanted the cloth steady for a picnic outside the lighthouse door. It pulled tight, humming like a plucked string. Another elastic cord crossed it, anchoring the far edge of the cloth. A peaceful rhythm grew in her hands: pull, hook, release. Behind her, the last colors of sunset brushed the sea. She kept her head low, checking every knot until the cloth stayed still.
In the lamp room above, Vance worked with the bronze shutter. The panel shielded the great lens during the day. A coiled spring guided the shutter, stretching each time he raised the metal arm for cleaning. He pressed the arm downward; the spring compressed, then rebounded, lifting the panel until a latch caught. The mechanism usually waited for a short ceremony each dawn, yet tonight he tested it early. The panel flexed back and forth under his slow experiments, sending dull thuds down the stone shaft. Dust drifted in narrow beams while the moving parts glimmered.
One sharp rebound travelled farther than he planned. The spring kicked the arm past its stop, and amber light poured through the hatch. The beam struck the platform where Sara crouched. She jerked her wrist; the nearest strap slipped free and snapped upward. The band shot through the hatch, hooked the shutter chain, and yanked it. Metal clanged, and the shutter slammed back, shaking the tower. A nesting gull burst from the ledge in a wild flutter, scattering soft feathers onto the cloth. One feather tipped a paper cup, which rolled and pressed against the second cord. The cord stretched, groaned, and released a tumble of fruit across the planks. Sara and Vance crouched together, gathering berries before they rolled away. Together they knotted the freed bands into one bright loop along the rail. The loop bounced when waves struck the rocks, and the revolving beam swept across the bright stripe.
