Green-blue sparks quivered inside the cracked bulb above the loading dock, throwing thin stripes across stacked cartons. It was late afternoon, and the automatic steel shutter began to slide downward again, groaning as its weight built speed. Dean and Suki aimed to reach the stop switch beside the shutter before the gap vanished; if the door touched the floor, they would stay inside until the night guard arrived. Over time, dust had dulled the labels on every shelf, and a faint woodland scent drifted from a torn sack of dried bark near the back aisle.
A trolley with loose wheels drifted across the narrow path, bumped a pallet, and knocked three glass jars toward the floor. The rolling jars set a second obstacle in motion, so the direct route closed quickly. Two side passages appeared: the left aisle wound safely around stacked foam mats, while the right offered a shorter line under a leaning ladder but left only shoulder space. The shutter dropped lower, chains clanking faster. Dean ducked right; Suki swung left. Dean’s jacket scraped against a protruding nail, tearing the sleeve, yet he reached the wall switch first and slapped it. The motor stalled, leaving a knee-high opening under the shutter. As the noise faded, his boot nudged a small wooden box that had toppled from the ladder. Inside lay a brass paperweight shaped like an anchor, its surface polished smooth by many hands. A brief recollection of quiet study rooms flickered when the metal caught the bulb’s sparks, but the race still echoed in Dean’s breathing. Suki reappeared through the safer aisle, her palms dusty yet unhurt.
Dean placed the brass anchor on the nearest shelf. The chain on the half-closed shutter still rattled.
Translation
