English Original
Hollow drumbeats rolled from the basement laundry room while Vera balanced a basket of damp towels on her hip. Each heavy rotation nudged the lone machine sideways, brushing a tilted broom against a paper sack of rice stored for the building’s pigeon visitors. The broom slid, tore the sack, and grains spilled across the cool concrete floor, forming a pale trail toward the open stairwell. Vera guided her steps upward, beginning her journey to the rooftop clothesline and aiming to reach the light above the sixth floor. Behind her, the thin cascade of rice kept slipping across the tiles without a sound loud enough to warn her.
On the first landing, rice continued to slide until a silver sprinkling reached the corridor. A curious raccoon, slim from alley scavenging, squeezed through the railing, its original destination forgotten the moment its nose touched the moving grains. Claws scratched tile, and the tiny marbles rattled farther down the steps. The commotion jostled a water-filled fern pot on the second-floor balcony; the pot tipped and released a sheet of cold water that hurried the rice along, washing kernels against apartment doors and beneath the mailbox slots. What started with laundry vibration now rippled through creatures, plants, and corridors in an unplanned celebration of motion.
Above the flow, Blake stepped out carrying paper lanterns for an evening balcony celebration. Rice bounced against his shoes, followed by the sliding water. He laid the lantern box aside and wedged a mop across the stairwell entrance, blocking the raccoon’s climb and slowing the liquid trail. The animal twitched its whiskers, turned, and retreated toward the alley, leaving wet prints and scattered grain behind. Vera reached the roof; shirts fluttered against a steel-grey horizon, framing an idyllic sweep of distant hills. A loose clothespin twirled along the wire toward the darker corner of the roof.
Translation
