Vera braced a clay paddle under her arm while her other hand brushed a pale groove across the kiln floor. The shallow mark, lighter than the surrounding soot, ran toward the glowing firebox like a footprint stretched into a line, and amber light slanted across it.

Her fingertips dusty with ash, she traced the groove again. Not once did the orange glow waver across the brick arch, yet fine green powder lay inside the cut as though dusted there on purpose. Only after the vent stone shifted did the draft change, and the thin powder stirred, catching the glare and scattering tiny reflections. A cord that held her apron hung with unexpected tension, quivering each time the kiln’s iron door rumbled; the movement emphasized how steady everything else remained. She lifted a shard of over-fired pottery that lay beside the groove. What stood out first was the way the line curved upward once the shard left its place. Heat shimmered, and soft shadow pooled behind each raised particle, mirroring her quiet internal stir.
