English Original

From the doorway of the drying shed, Nina watched the kiln’s viewing slit burn like a narrow ember across black bricks. Heat pressed outward; resin in the timber rafters gave off a tangy whiff, but her attention lingered on a small, square shard leaning against the outer wall. Its surface, still powdered with grey ash, held a scored circle that overlapped itself in a loose spiral. She had passed this spot many evenings, yet the spiral looked sharper tonight, as though the last firing had cleaned its edges. Nina let her gaze ruminate on the shape, counting turns until the glow behind the bricks pulsed again and drew orange needles through the cracks.

Beyond the shed, a bluff of pale limestone lifted above the orchard. Cool evening air slid down its face and folded under the kiln’s warmth, carrying the peppery scent of crushed leaves from the rows below, a reminder that the autumn equinox had slipped by two nights ago. Lanterns dotted the path where unpicked fruit glimmered; their skins, split in places, released sweet liquid that met the draft in quick, tangy gusts. Each breath cooled the inside of Nina’s mouth, then warmed again as it mixed with smoke curling from the flue. She contemplated the easy rhythm of these exchanges—hot rushing out, cool drifting in—until a quieter thought pressed forward: the spiral might belong to that same dialogue of heat and time.

She stepped closer. Nowhere along the curved face of the kiln could she find another mark like it. The shard looked ordinary, yet curiosity pricked. Her fingertips warmed, she lifted the square and brushed ash away. What stopped her was the faint groove that crossed the spiral, meeting it at four neat points. If the notch were any deeper, ash would have swallowed the pattern completely. Nina contemplated whether the maker had meant the cross as measurement or memory; then a slip of grit cut her thumb, and the shard lurched from her grasp to tap the bricks. In that bright instant she saw the four points matched the cardinal cuts inside the kiln where flames turned; the spiral, no ornament, mapped the crawl of fire.

She set the shard back and moved to the doorway again. The same slit of brightness glowed, yet its light now sat inside the spiral she carried in her head. Seldom had the orange line looked so deliberate. The bluff above was already dim; only a last ribbon of silver sky sat between rock and orchard. Smoke drifted sideways, tracing the cross she had just uncovered before unraveling into dusk. Nina reached for the shard once more, turned it so the groove faced the path, and leaned it upright against the warm brick.

Translation
