Warm hay and dry grain mixed in the coop air, strong enough to tickle Lily’s nose. A wooden feed grinder stood near the wall; its small iron wheel waited in the glow of a hanging lamp. Lily set her palm on the rim and gave a slow spin. The wheel turned a fraction, and dusty kernels trickled onto the straw floor. A nearby rooster tilted his head at the soft rattle.

Jude stepped beside her, brushed straw from the crank, and tugged the handle twice. The wheel pivoted faster, and the trickle widened into a gentle spiral of grain. Hens gathered, their feet scratching in a circular dance around the growing pile. Curious, Lily leaned closer and spun the wheel backward; grain paused, then a hidden gear clicked free and an unexpected silver bead rolled out with the kernels. Jude caught the bead before it vanished under feathers, surprised by the tiny reflection of moonlight on its side. He placed it on a ledge, and they wound the grinder again, testing different speeds. Each twist changed the pattern: first a steady ribbon, then a brief whirl that sprayed grain like a miniature tide across the straw. A faint draught brushed their cheeks, and low clucks echoed against the wooden boards. They laughed without words, letting the wheel spin down on its own.

Outside, clouds shifted and released a quick breeze through the open hatch. Straw lifted around their ankles and swirled toward the doorway. Feathers rose with the draft, fluttering out into the dark yard while the grinder’s wheel turned one last lazy circle.
