A single fluorescent tube above the basins buzzed, its pale flicker marking stripes across the damp tile. Kira stood near the largest tub, sleeves rolled high. She planned to carry a thick wool blanket to the narrow balcony outside the swinging door. Heavy rinse water still clung to the fabric, and drops gathered along the fringe. She dragged the edge closer and tried to nestle the bundle against her hip. At once her boots skated sideways on a thin sheet of soap over the floor. The blanket slipped from her arms and splashed back into the suds. Cloudy water raced toward the drain, and Felix jumped from the spreading puddle.

Kira hauled the dripping blanket again and pushed toward the door. Weight dragged her arms low, while the slick floor tilted every step sideways. The direct approach failed twice, leaving wider pools each time. While she caught her breath, she saw a trickle curl around an idle broom. The tiny current washed loose suds whenever the blanket pressed on the tub rim. She folded one corner sharply over the rim and held it down. The squeeze sent a warm surge pouring along the broom handle toward the tiles. Water scrubbed soap away and left a rough, almost dry strip across the floor. Kira and Felix slid the lighter blanket over the cleared strip. Their shoulders bumped, and the damp cloth appeared to cuddle their hands. The redirected rush splashed onto a basket of clean shirts, leaving pale spots across the cotton. Two damp handprints—one narrow, one broad—stuck on the table edge. A silvery drip kept rolling between them toward the humming drain.
