The late afternoon light slanted through a narrow roof window. It caught dust that drifted like tiny specks of gold. A faint smell of old paper mixed with cool wood filled the narrow loft. Leo ducked past a sagging armchair into the quiet den that stood at the far end. He planned to clear floor space for a new sketch board. An old chest, trimmed with brass and painted with faded waves, blocked the corner. Beside it rested a small brass compass, a curiosity from some forgotten trip. The chest had been painted decades ago, as the washed colors suggested. Its lid was held shut by a swollen hinge. The brass felt cold and unmoving under his pushing palms. A ticking clock below marked the passing minutes, while the chest’s sheer weight pressed back from above.

He slid a thin ruler between lid and frame, then leaned his weight sideways. Wood creaked; flakes of blue paint scattered across the carpet. At the same moment, a wobbling tower of magazines slid outward. He steadied them with one quick elbow before they toppled. The lid lifted at last. Inside lay a glass bottle on a square of faded cloth. Sand covered the bottom, and a paper sailboat floated above the grains. When he raised the bottle, a low rushing sound whispered from its neck. As if an immense ocean spoke from inside. Empathy glimmered in the tiny boat and the careful knot that held the cloth. He lowered the bottle gently, closed the chest, and the ticking below kept its steady pace.
