Condensation cooled Rosa’s palms on the metal pitcher as she threaded her shoulders between tight chair backs. The weight of the water tugged downward, so she braced one elbow against a tabletop for balance. A hesitant swing of a nearby purse brushed her hip; the jolt made the pitcher’s lip tilt. A clear sheet poured out, splashing across the tiles and forcing her knees into a quick bend.
The spill found a narrow groove that ran toward the entrance waiting area. Each tile ridge guided the stream the way wind channels sand. As the water gathered speed, a tiny shudder passed through stacked take-out menus resting on a low stool. They slid, slow at first, then faster, the glossy pages acting like stiff paddles that pushed more water ahead of them. An outburst of steam hissed from the coffee machine at the bar counter, masking the scrape of cardboard against tile. A stoic busser near the kitchen doorway had been arranging clean glasses; by the time he noticed the oncoming flow, several menus had already nudged a chair leg. The chair wobbled, and a glass bowl of mints rolled off its seat, scattering green disks that spun in widening circles.
Rosa skidded after the water, her shoes losing grip. She had placed a towel over her shoulder earlier; now she flung it down in a tentative sweep, pressing with both forearms to dam the moving edge. The first effort only slowed the stream, so she shifted her weight, knees low, until the fabric bunched into the groove. The cascade thinned, diverted toward a floor drain hidden beneath a rubber mat that had been laid during last week’s repairs. Behind her, the busser crouched, palms flat, sliding the scattered mints into a plastic tray. A new stack of clean glasses had been arranged beside the sink, their rims catching the overhead light. A faint drip tapped from the edge of the towel to the bucket below.
