English Original
Lars slid a copper pitcher off the bar counter and threaded between tables while golden ceiling lamps washed caramel light across the dining area. Dish rings blended with low voices, and warmth from nearby ovens drifted toward the entrance hallway. He aimed to pour fresh water for a family waiting under the honey-colored menu board. A row of dessert spoons had been balanced along the counter edge; the pitcher’s rim nudged one spoon as he passed. Metal skipped against wood, tapped a porcelain trinket perched beside the cash drawer, and the tiny figure toppled, rolling toward the tiled floor.
The trinket struck the ground, spun twice, and glided beneath swinging saloon doors that guarded the kitchen doorway. Its smooth sides met a doorstop, and the wooden block jolted free. Freed weight pushed the door outward; the panel brushed a service cart parked against the wall. The cart’s front wheel turned, nudging it forward like a slow domino. Its corner touched a narrow cabinet beside the cashier station. The cabinet latch, loosened by countless openings, gave way; laminated menus slid out and fluttered onto warm terracotta tiles, scattering ochre reflections across shiny surfaces.
Tara stepped from the kitchen, bracing the wandering cart with one knee before it gained speed, and the miniature cascade lost its force. Above, faint footfalls crossed the ceiling where the owner’s residence occupied a low attic, sending a final vibration through hanging glassware. Lars steadied the pitcher, yet a thin stream had already escaped, streaking across the tiles toward the entrance. He crouched, shoulders tight, picked up the trinket, and placed it on a safe corner of the bar. Behind him, menus lay like oversized autumn leaves, and a narrow ribbon of water continued to wind across the warm floor toward the waiting area.
Translation
