Dust had gathered along the plastic edge of the first mirror, outlining its thin oval in grey powder. Wyatt balanced the cool surface against a thick field guide once written by an ornithologist; the hard cover felt warm where the beam had lingered. A magazine with a photograph of an umpire mid-call propped the second mirror, its glossy page smooth under Ivy’s careful thumb. The light rectangle skipped from the side table to the chair back, then slid across the floor. When Ivy nudged the chair, fabric under her knee pressed a woven pattern into her skin, and the reflection wandered a hand-span off the white card. A strip of adhesive had been pressed firmly to the card earlier, yet the corner already curled, inviting another small error.
A sharp thunk broke their rhythm. Near the door, a wooden crate of spare mirrors and plastic wedges had tipped after Pierce shifted his reading chair; splinters along its rim scratched Wyatt’s palm as he caught it. Both children knelt to collect the cool mirrors, stacking them carefully before returning across the carpet. During those quiet seconds the source beam dimmed under a passing cloud, and the warm square on the table cooled. By the time sunlight brightened again, the spot on the far wall looked faint, as if dust hung inside their own vision rather than in the air. The third mirror, once exact, now threw light high onto a shelf, illuminating nothing useful.
Wyatt chose to keep working with what remained. He wiped the first mirror with the edge of his sleeve; shallow scratches, almost invisible before, caught under his fingertip like fine sand. Each mark scattered brightness sideways, explaining the weaker path. Ivy slipped a thin wedge beneath the guidebook, lifting it a finger’s width. The reflected beam crawled down the shelf, across the chair back, and onto the card’s curling edge. A mote-filled column hung between mirrors, trembling each time air moved. Wyatt held the tilted mirror, the pale spot quivering on the wall.
Translation
