A narrow gutter beneath his display channelled wash water from smoothing tools; she tipped the bowl and let a thin stream fall into it. The flow struck the weathered stone paving, ricocheting toward a tray of water-soaked sand at the science-toy booth. The mixture loosened, swallowing a display marble like calm quicksand and releasing a soft burp of bubbles. That unexpected pull rocked a row of wooden spoons resting along the tray’s rim; two, which had been balanced by the vendor earlier, slid down and tapped a stack of tin cups. The metallic rattle lifted a patch of pigeons that had gathered on an awning, their wings scattering blue-grey feathers across the lane.

Fern lunged forward, bracing one knee against the stone, and pressed the bowl against the gutter mouth. The stream weakened, yet water already raced along tiny grooves toward her own stall. It skirted loose herbs, then curled around the leg of the potted plant. Soil darkened and began to escape through the pot’s drainage hole in thin streaks. She yanked a length of packing twine from her pocket, twisted it into a knotted loop, and wedged the loop under the gutter lip. The wooden channel lifted just enough to divert the trickle toward a drain farther along the lane. Returning to the brass hook, Fern set the half-filled pitcher upon it; droplets kept sliding from its rim onto the newly stained board below.
