English Original
"The panel keeps sliding."
He pressed his thumb against the damp metal arm, but a slick film of condensation robbed his grip. Reed sought a clear view of the tiny blue shrimp hiding among the branching coral behind the glass. The magnifying panel, heated by the bright spotlight above, leaned forward and smeared the scene like steamed kitchen glass. He lifted the outer edge, yet the enlarged metal frame dragged heavily and refused to hold its place. A briny cabbage smell seeped from the feeding bucket nearby, mixing with salty tile dampness and the metallic tang of the rail.
A sudden gathering of students squeezed into the narrow corridor, shoulders brushing Reed’s back and rocking the loose frame further. He had tried pushing harder earlier, yet the hinge had been widened by the heat and only groaned. A cool vent above the wall sconce breathed a faint peppermint-sharp chill that cut through the usual algae sweetness of the hall. He waited, counting five breaths, while the metal cooled and contracted, then nudged the edge at the exact pause between crowd bumps. The panel, freer now, glided back, and its own weight locked into balance like a seesaw finally level. Inside the tank, a strip of plastic sedge swayed beside the coral, and the shrimp’s speckled shell snapped into crisp focus. If the vent stopped now, the panel would sag again, so he kept one palm poised below it.
Reed signaled to his mother, who had been examining the purple glow of a jellyfish column a few steps away. She crossed through the fading cabbage odor, raised her camera, and captured the shrimp while he steadied the panel. A tickle of salt traced his upper lip, and his fingers began to fidget against the cold lens rim. He had hoped the picture and the card would match, so he slid one identification card free and compared shapes and colors. The card stayed in his damp hand, its glossy surface carrying a faint vinegar-plastic scent. Beside him, his mother reviewed the fresh photo on her screen, while the shrimp still hovered between their two clear views.
Translation
