The plume kept spraying, but the mat guided each ribbon downward, and the valve sank back under its own weight. Ned gathered the wet tokens; their lacquer gleamed, a little warped yet still readable. The diorama now shimmered with unintended ripples, its small mystery sharpened by fresh reflections.
