English Original
A sharp metallic clang rang from the cart corral when Ruby tugged a trolley free. One front wheel answered with a dry wobble-beat, rattling over every tile. Fluorescent lights buzzed above her while the air-conditioning hummed like distant water. She aimed for the canned-fruit aisle, but the wheel jammed against a sticky patch near the bakery counter. The thin plastic showed surprising resilience, yet it refused to roll. A sparrow, trapped somewhere among the rafters, darted over the produce bins; its wings brushed lettuce leaves with a quick papery flutter.
Ruby knelt. A smear of old gum glued the axle. From a shelf of school supplies she grabbed a wooden ruler—the nearest tool long enough to pry. The gum cracked, but the wheel still scraped. She slid the ruler again; a louder snap echoed, and the trolley lurched forward, almost knocking a basket of key-chain toys. One bright metal trinket rolled out, chiming against the floor before the bird swooped, mistook it for food, and dropped it onto Ruby’s open palm. The unexpected gift felt lightweight, the sort of cheap memento children clip to backpacks.
At self-checkout the scanner beeped, failed, then beeped again. Two slightly different barcodes on her peach can argued across the screen; she tried to reconcile them by turning the label, but the machine insisted on silence. She overcame the standoff by waving for an attendant, and canned peaches finally joined her total. While she paid, the sparrow landed once more, pecked the abandoned trinket, and sent it skittering beneath another register. Ruby pushed the trolley toward the exit, the ruler still wedged under the front frame. A pale groove curved across the linoleum beside the quiet cart.
Translation
