English Original
Warm afternoon light fell across the narrow market street.
Bram stopped near a vendor who displayed toys below a window.
He counted coins inside his cloth pouch with quick fingers.
One coin slipped, struck the table edge, and rolled away.
It darted under stacked baskets and vanished between wooden crates.
The rolling metal shook the lowest crate, oranges began to wobble.
Bram reached forward, but the oranges slid and blocked the gap.
His fingers tapped the table in an uneasy rhythm.
He closed his eyes and knelt to listen for movement.
A faint ring echoed below the crates, and his hand moved.
He slid fingers through the narrow opening and touched cold metal.
Instead of the coin, a round button surfaced between splinters.
Empty boards under the crates formed a slim opportunity between shadows.
He set the button near the baskets, then lifted each orange.
The small gap now showed his missing coin beside a dusty nail.
Bram nudged the nail aside and pulled the coin back out.
The crate leaned again, but nothing else moved this time.
He placed the coin on the table.
Translation
