Soft morning light filled the small wooden shed. Olive wanted the red paint jar on the back shelf. A tall wooden barrel stood in her path. She pushed the barrel, but it did not respond. Her arms grew weary after the second try. A thin haze of dust drifted around her shoes.

She stopped and tapped the barrel with her knuckle. The sound rang light, almost like an empty drum. She noticed the barrel felt too light to be full. She tipped it sideways and caught the rim quickly. An acorn rolled from a small crack and kept moving. It crossed the floor and struck a leaning broom handle. The broom fell forward and slid the barrel farther aside. The path opened, and the paint jar shone on the shelf. Outside, green tomatoes continued to ripen under the quiet sun. Olive lifted the jar and closed the shed door behind her.
