English Original

Every morning Glen crossed the narrow iron walkway skirting the vats; today, the railing felt cool enough to mist his knuckles. The mill’s floor heaters still hummed, yet the air above the pulp lacked its usual damp warmth. Nowhere along the makeshift esplanade could he spot a vent left open, so he paused, letting steam bead on his glasses while water rumbled below like slow thunder.

Up in the drying loft, Max threaded between pale curtains of half-made paper. He raised each sheet, wrists turning in a silent pantomime of inspection, then pegged it to the next beam. A draft reached him as well—thin, salty, almost coastal—ruffling the rows and pushing a chill through his cuffs. If the pulp were any colder, the fibers would tighten and cloud the finish, yet the old skylight showed no crack, only cloudy glass glowing with milky daylight.

Glen descended, boots tapping, and circled the main boiler. A sharper gust rolled through, a miniature gale that lifted steam into twisting banners. He stilled, closed his eyes, and traded sight for temperature: cheeks tingled, left hand tinged with warmth, right hand brushed by cool flow. Turning toward the contrast, he found a service door ajar, its latch caught on a frayed cord. Absolute silence following the thud, Glen pressed the door shut, then checked the nearest gauges; needles quivered where they usually sat calm. The routine break had become a turning point, but he decided against words, only straightened the latch and nudged the cord aside with deliberate care.

Later, Max descended, finding Glen resetting drying times on a clipboard. They shared only a nod before returning to separate tasks. Minutes slipped by; the chill retreated, warmth thickened, and steam settled into slow drifts again. On the highest rack, one sheet hung skewed, its edge still shivering from the earlier draft. A pale trace of frost clung to the corner until the room’s steady warmth began to thaw it.

Translation
