A slim trickle had dried across the touch-pool rim before Clara reached the basin. Blue ambient light pulsed through the curved glass above, and her shadow stretched long across the shallow water. She aimed to spot the sea cucumber that keepers said drifted near the rocks, yet only ripples lingered against the stone. The creature had tucked itself beneath a granite slab set inside the pool, so all she saw were overlapping reflections of passing stingrays overhead. Around her, floor path markings glimmered like submerged stripes. A visitor in rolled-up sleeves, moving with the slow sweep of a beachcomber, leaned in, but even his careful gaze uncovered nothing. From the loudspeaker, a distant hum warned that the feeding show would open in ten minutes, and children already pressed against the rope at the viewing area.
Reed, holding a narrow periscope picked up at a flea market the previous weekend, squeezed beside her. Its brass rim caught the ceiling glow and sent a bright ribbon across the pool. The first beam scattered; glare danced and the hiding spot stayed dark. They adjusted. Clara lifted the magnifying glass that had been chained beside the large tank placard. Together they angled mirror and lens until a softer halo slid under the slab. Sand stirred, not from a sea cucumber but from a crab no larger than a coin. The tiny creature advanced, claws tapping, then paused beneath the widening light. Reed lowered the periscope—an item once jumbled at a neighborhood rummage sale—and the crab climbed on, clutching its smooth tube. A pump exhaled; water hissed gently. Realizing lines had grown thick, they walked back through the observation tunnel. The basin rim that had been crusted with a dry trickle now shone under a fresh, moving stream.
Translation
