English Original
"A sparrow's pecking the sample plate," Kay whispered.
Hope froze, her elbows bent and hovering above the toothpick cup as the small bird hopped between crumbs. The queue edged forward; both friends shifted their weight to follow the floor arrows while keeping balance near the low shelf. The sample plate had been wiped clean except for cinnamon dust, yet the sparrow tapped the surface again, neck stretching like a spring. An aromatic swirl of cardamom drifted from the kitchen pass-through, and the bird fluttered, brushing Kay’s wrist with a sudden beat. Hope steadied herself against the cool stainless-steel counter edge, knees flexing to absorb the jolt. Staff voices mixed with the timer’s beep, but nobody reached for the tiny intruder.
The queue paused when a fresh array of oblong pastries slid onto a tray behind the fogged glass. Kay leaned forward, ankle joints bracing, and lifted a single toothpick; Hope’s hand hovered over the same cup, then drifted back. If Kay had grabbed the last toothpick, Hope would have waited longer, yet a few remained, so their shoulders relaxed slightly. The sparrow darted toward the packaging station, claws skimming over ribbon rolls. Its beak pinched a thin red strand that had been loosened and left dangling from the cabinet hinge. Kay’s torso twisted to follow the motion. The dangling ribbon had been caught on the hinge earlier when a box corner jammed. The bird tugged again, wing tips brushing tensed knuckles, and the ribbon slipped free without sound.
Hope stepped sideways, feet sliding along the floor-marking curve, and angled her phone to light the ribbon. As the sparrow flapped toward the entrance, the strand streamed behind like a kite tail, revealing the creature’s intent. Kay released the toothpick and watched the ribbon rather than the crumbs. Their earlier assumption shifted; it wasn’t the pastry that interested the sparrow, but nesting material. Together they opened a space near the door, calves tightening as they crouched. The bird shot outside, gaining lift over the bench. They exchanged a short nod, then rejoined the queue, knees softening with each pace. The toothpick, its tip still clean, slid from Kay’s fingers onto the sample plate’s edge.
Translation
