The outermost slot on the low display shelf showed only a pale rectangle where a small wooden cube once rested. Oscar bent down and counted three more bright rectangles that marched upward across the shelf like steps. Dust brushed against his knuckles as he traced the clean edges; each gap felt smoother than the gritty surface around it. A faint trail of fine sawdust led toward the interactive corner, where a small carpentry bench waited beside a three-minute timer. Under the bench he discovered a single cube, its flanks warm from many hands. The soft pine had been sanded so carefully that no hidden splinter remained. The cube weighed less than a pocket stone, yet he needed three more to match the empty pattern on the shelf.
When the timer blinked zero, Oscar planed a strip of soft pine until its surface turned almost silky and cool. An attendant slipped a second cube onto his palm, this one carved with a praying mantis frozen in mid-strike above tall grass. Running a thumb along the cube’s underside, he found a narrow ridge that matched the clean outline. The bright rectangles now looked like waiting sockets, not careless cleaning marks. A tour group soon filled the narrow corridor between wings, blocking the direct path back toward the shelf and slowing every step. Oscar looped through the lockers area instead, brushing past rows of cool metal doors. Near an umbrella stand he spotted a third cube rolling under a coat, its lacquer striped black and gold like a yellowjacket. Three cubes clicked together in his hands, yet the diagonal on the shelf still lacked one bright corner. If he walked away then, the gap would remain obvious to anyone passing the case. He paused, then returned to the carpentry bench as soon as space opened at the front of the line. Again he sanded a block, and this time a tiny eclipse appeared, dark circle against pale wood. Back at the shelf, he aligned the four cubes with the smooth rectangles, and the pattern re-formed in a single breath. Fine dust slid off the shelf's edge and landed on his shoes. Oscar pressed the last cube—its face burned with a tiny eclipse—into the waiting rectangle.
Translation
