Grey crossed to an empty bench built from warm maple slats, certain his hypothesis would soon prove true: stronger afternoon light might draw the shy panda onto the visible perch.

Minutes passed, yet the enclosure opposite the deck stayed silent; only bamboo leaves stirred behind the barrier, offering no red fur to sketch. Waiting became the first obstacle. Grey shifted strategy: instead of staring at the empty window, he sketched quick outlines of the peacock while nibbling kernels. A rope barrier beside him blocked the side walkway; the only justification visible for that barrier was a row of soapy buckets and brushes drying in the sun. The delay felt ordinary, so he set his water bottle on the highest railing, kept sketching, and let the bright light warm his shoulders.

The bottle had cooled in the ice chest, and the warm air wrapped it at once. Beads formed, slid together, and dripped through a groove in the maple rail. Each drop splashed onto a small hill of maize crumbs near Grey’s elbow, turning yellow grains into a sticky paste that oozed downhill along the polished wood. When the paste reached the edge, it tipped over and landed on the pathway, right under the slow wheels of a stroller. The wheels rolled forward, smearing a pale stripe across the stones. Grey caught the motion, lifted the bottle, and moved it onto the stone bench, halting the miniature river. He packed his sketchbook; his gaze followed the stroller instead of the railing. Behind him, an unnoticed ribbon of water kept sliding beneath the kiosk frame toward the peacock’s trailing feathers.
