"The float drifts left," Amos said.
Tara slid a small stool two planks forward. Glare from the open water flashed against her pupils, so she lowered the cap brim before lifting the rod across her knees. Bea, seated near the rope-wrapped post, drew her own line under the willow canopy, its restless leaves casting quilted shadow-patches over the lake. Tara’s tackle had been prepared earlier; the knot had been cleared and the hook pressed into a neat pellet of pale dough. Yet the light breeze nudged the cork toward the darker flank of the post where weed fronds waited to snare it. She eased the reel, letting slack form until the float drifted back into the dappled strip. Creaks from the boards, insect buzz, and distant bird calls formed an unhurried symphony around them.
A sudden metallic fanfare burst from the shore equipment area when the spare bucket toppled against the folding chair. Bea rose quickly; a passing cyclist, rolling too near the willow, had caught kite string on the outer branches and required help untangling it. Tara set the rod safely between the stools, followed her companion onto the bank, and their footsteps faded from the dock. While hands worked above the cyclist’s helmet, the sun slid past the willow shadow. Heat pooled over the empty planks; moisture evaporated; the dough bait reached a soft crescendo of warmth, lost its grip, and oozed in a thin ribbon through the board gap. The line, suddenly lighter, sprang upward, and the bare hook dangled, glinting in the overpowering glare.
They returned to see concentric rings widening beneath the gap, tiny fish circling the faint, organic cloud dissolving below. Tara lifted the rod; the cork rocked without weight. She pinched fresh dough, moulding it like a quick sculpture around the hook and pressing harder along the shank so it hugged the metal. Cooling air brushed her damp palm, helping the mixture stay firm. To stop the next melt, she edged deeper into the willow shade, blocking a shard of light with her own profile. The cast arced smoothly; the float kissed a darker patch beside a reflected-gleam corridor. The rod bowed with mild tension, and Tara held the line between thumb and forefinger, while the float bobbed toward the widening penumbra.
