"Hold the rod," Quinn called.
Joy shifted her grip on the cork handle and stepped into the mid-dock shade zone, where willow leaves drew blue-grey stripes across the pale planks. A curious heron balanced on the rope-wrapped post; water plants thrived below it, their silver stems rocking with each ripple. Earlier, on a supply run, Joy had paused to stop and smell the roses that tangled near the shore ladder, and a tiny spiral seashell still rested beside the closed bait container. The soft dough bait had been pressed around the small hook, and the float now drifted toward open glare. She raised the rod tip and tried to maneuver the rig back beneath the branches, careful not to brush Quinn’s sketchbook that lay flat on the boards.
The line obeyed, but a sudden cross-breeze caught the recast. The stronger swing carried the hook outward; the bait sheared off mid-arc and splashed near the heron, which flicked its head yet stayed still. Joy’s shoulders stiffened as the loose bait bobbed away: only three pieces remained under the lid at the shore equipment area. Wind rippled the water again—if it calmed, the float would settle exactly where the shaded fish waited. She walked back, lifted the lid, and pinched one lump in half, leaving a reserve. Returning, she kneaded the smaller portion around the hook, then angled the rod lower for a side-arm release.
The shortened cast landed quietly, the float touching down just inside the grey patch beside the roots, while the lighter bait clung to the hook. A faint coil stayed in the monofilament, so she eased the rod back, letting the loop slip through wet guides until the line straightened. The heron watched, unmoving. Bait was now scarce, and the float sat a hand-span outside the deepest shade, yet both needs survived together. Joy kept the rod angled low, line humming under her thumb.
Translation
