English Original
A bent landing net, a tin of wriggling grubs, and a fiberglass rod lay beside the shore equipment area where Eve planted her bare soles on the warm, slightly porous plank. Kit sketched quietly in the mid-dock shade zone, while Eve’s rod tip reached toward the willow-root water zone that often offered shelter to cruising fish. She flicked her wrist; the line arced, then jerked short. The rod vibrated through her elbows as if tugged by wet sand. Reeling in, she found a muddy clam clamped around the hook. Its weight dragged on the rod, and slim residue from the lake streaked her fingers when she tried to twist the shell free. She had already lost two precious grubs; hurrying felt risky, yet daylight thinned.
Eve wedged the rod under her forearm and pried again. The hinge refused to open, and each shake only deepened the clam’s grip. A gust nudged the float toward the mooring post, threatening to wrap the line. While easing tension, she noticed a narrow gap at the hinge, a keyhole of dark water glinting inside. The same stony heft that spoiled her cast might pull the bait deeper than her small sinker ever could. She threaded the line through the gap, knotting it against the shell’s ridged edge. Her shoulders dropped into a lower stance, knees bent for balance, and she swung in a slower, shoulder-led arc. The improvised weight entered clean water, tugging the line straight so the float steadied just beyond the willow roots.
A faint dip bent the rod tip; the line tightened, then went slack—only a nibble. Eve smiled without words, aware the feeding window still flickered open. She walked back to shore for another grub, the dock flexing under each measured step. The tin that had been brimming earlier now showed a shallow hollow in the sawdust.
Translation
