A shallow plastic tray had trapped a mirror-smooth pool of ochre mud beside the rope queue for the giraffe feeding zone. Midday light poured over it, turning the damp clay into a glossy caramel sheet where one clean oval dent lay at the center. Hazel crouched, palm hovering, then brushed away a strand of straw. The dent looked accidental at first, yet the rounded edges matched the giraffe tracks stamped along the concrete footprint trail. Families began to convene behind her, their chatter folding into one warm hum while a keeper rolled bales of hay toward the railing.

Hazel wanted to address a small bubble that wobbled across the mud, so she slid a thin twig under the tray and tipped it. The liquid shape shifted, and the oval deepened into a clear hoof impression—this tray was a mold, not a spill. The moment she steadied it, a bell rang; viewing spots along the front rail filled in seconds. Fixing the print had cost her place. A loose fellowship of visitors pressed forward, elbows brushing, leaving only the second row open. She lifted the tray, searched for space, and discovered a bench under the amber shade of a striped awning.

The bench offered safety for the fragile mold but sat two steps farther from the giraffes. Hazel balanced the tray there, clay gleaming like wet copper, then slipped into the gap behind a stroller at the rail’s edge. If she had kept the tray at her feet, the print would already have cracked under shifting shoes. Now the print might dry unevenly, and her view carried a rim of shoulders, yet both hopes survived in workable form. A young giraffe bent its dappled neck and brushed the sun-warmed railing with its dark muzzle.
