Cool condensation slid across Lars’s fingers as he tipped the first paper cup away from the drinking fountain. Amber light from the corridor lamps ran along the jug beside him, and a strip of red tape—added by the biology teacher—marked the level needed to water the class sapling. He poured; the surface climbed but stopped three finger-breadths below the line. The fountain had been adjusted earlier so the stream rose only a short arc, so he filled a second cup. While the jug waited, a poster of a khaki-clad researcher leaned against the display case, its corners catching the honey-coloured glare.

The second cup sloshed as he hurried back. Drops pattered on the warm tiles and trickled toward the baseboard. A newfound column of ants streamed from a crack, their shiny bodies crowding the wet path. The sudden movement drew a slim gecko perched near the window; it sprang, scattering ants and bumping a palm-sized plastic panther that decorated the ledge. The panther slid, brushed a burgeoning stack of graded worksheets, and the papers began to fan outward. Lars lunged, pressing his palm flat to still the top sheet before the bell could scatter them further.

He collected a final cup. When the water met the red tape, the level bulged once, crossed the mark, and stayed—a clear threshold reached. Lars carried the filled jug to the window, letting a caramel-tinted stream soak the dark soil around the sapling until it gleamed. The bell rang, sharp and brief; he turned toward the classroom door, stacking his empty cups together. Behind him, ants threaded around cooling patches of water that kept creeping along the honey-lit tiles.

他匆忙帶回第二杯時，水花濺在溫熱的地磚上並沿踢腳板方向流去。裂縫裡竄出一條新出現的螞蟻隊伍，閃亮的身體擁向濕漉漉的路徑。窗邊一隻細長壁虎被驚動，猛然撲下，螞蟻四散，牠的身體碰到窗台上的掌大塑膠黑豹模型。黑豹滑動，掠過一疊正逐漸增厚的批改作業紙，紙張往外散開。拉斯衝上前，用手掌穩住最上面那張紙，才沒讓鈴聲把它們吹得更遠。

他再接最後一杯水。當水面觸到紅膠帶時，先鼓起一下，隨即越線並保持在那裡——明顯達標。拉斯端著滿壺走向窗邊，焦糖色的水流浸入黝黑土壤，小樹苗的枝葉因而泛光。鈴聲短促響起，他把空杯疊起轉身回教室。身後，螞蟻繞過漸漸變涼的水跡，仍在暖黃地磚的溝縫間穿行。
