Sixteen humming minutes had drifted since washer six started tumbling, and Sara hovered beside the folding table with an empty basket. The laundromat’s ceiling fans murmured above the layered chorus of thuds, sloshes, and the wall clock’s tick. Mom had asked her to move the load to a dryer once the digital display reached zero, so every new buzz pulled her attention like a bell. The last free dryer had been claimed moments earlier, so dryer four was her only option. When the washer finally groaned to a halt, she heaved the damp clothes into her basket; the mass gave a slow wobble and left a dark trace of water dots across the tiles. At dryer four she fed three quarters without pause, but the fourth stuck halfway, the coin slot giving a dull clank and refusing to swallow more. She tilted the stubborn coin, pressed again, even polished it on her sleeve, yet the mechanism only grated, its steady plateau of noise mocking the effort.
Before frustration grew louder than the machines, Sara hurried to the change dispenser. If a fresh quarter went through, she would finish before another washer released its load. The dispenser thunked and poured silver disks in a bright cascade. Back at dryer four, the new coin sank smoothly with a muted plink, and warm air began rushing behind the drum. Relief lasted only a breath; her basket brushed the folding table, a shaggy sweater—thick enough to please a young yak—slipped out, and a lone striped sock followed, skittering behind the dryer. The hidden gap swallowed the fabric, leaving just a colorful tip. A bent umbrella shaft leaning in the lost-sock basket looked thin enough to reach, so she grabbed the hollow rod and pushed it under the machine like a lever. Metal whispered against enamel, the rod vibrated, and the sock edged forward with each tiny scrape while the dryer drummed on. Sara was reaching farther, the rod trembling against the casing as the display beside her ticked down another second.
