Luke swung his backpack onto the blue-grey tiles, and Bea pressed her travel card against the stainless reader beside the ticket gate. A red line appeared: “Balance Low”. She moved to the silver top-up machine where fluorescent light flickered across its glass screen. An ample handful of coins rattled from her purse, and she slid the first stack into the narrow slot. One heavy coin jammed halfway. She nudged it with a second coin; the screen counted twenty units, still short of the fare. The machine accepted the smaller pieces, yet its timer bar shrank faster than her pile. She had been halfway toward finishing when a sharp clatter echoed behind them.
An elderly passenger’s grocery bag had tipped, sending green apples rolling toward the yellow safety line. Bea’s habit of being generous pulled her away from the machine; she crouched, gathered the fruit, and returned the bag to its owner. Meanwhile the departure board above the platform chimed, and Luke watched the digits flip. By the time Bea hurried back, the machine had gone dark. Her card lay in the return tray, and a pale receipt fluttered beside it, a printed eulogy for the lost seconds. The balance showed only twenty-two units. They needed forty. A chill draft crossed the hall; they had to reconcile that missing sum with the schedule gap now shrinking to two minutes.
Bea and Luke began to exchange ideas in quick, breath-short whispers. Luke had already topped up his own card earlier; he pushed it through the reader, stepped aside, then fed two of his remaining coins into the machine for Bea. She waited for the reader’s timer to reset before sliding her card again—same tool, different sequence. The screen glowed green at thirty-eight units, just enough. Doors along the train hissed open. Bea cleared the gate as the final tone sounded, Luke close behind. Behind them, the thin receipt lay beside the machine’s base, its corners lifting each time a cool draft rolled through the hall.
Translation
