"The rod is bending."

Lily crouched in the mid-dock shade, knees brushing warm splintery boards while fine ripples passed beneath the gaps. Reed braced his feet on the sturdy planks and lifted the fishing rod until its line hung clear of the willow roots. Beside him, a straw basket full of dough balls rocked whenever the dock flexed. Shallow grooves had been worn into its handle by many lakeside afternoons. Across the water, the late-afternoon landscape showed faint gold on distant reeds, while nearer surfaces mirrored a fading sky. For a brief interlude the lake lay quiet; even the rope on the mooring post hung without motion. Reed breathed out, flicked his wrist, and sent the float arcing toward the darker patch under the willow. The thin nylon line hummed through the guides and then stilled once the bait touched water.

When Reed shifted his weight, the straw basket slid an inch and nudged the rod butt. The quick impact snapped the slender shaft forward, and the sudden whip sent the float leaping from its calm spot. It landed off target, drifted toward the mooring post, and its trailing line brushed the coarse rope. Behind them, distant frogs produced uneven chirps, and the soft air held a weedy smell that clung to their sleeves. In the next breath the rope’s rough strands quickly caught the filament. They began to twine it around the post, tightening with each feather-light wave. Reed lunged, pinched the line against the boards, and raised the rod high. The sharp angle unlooped the filament and let the float glide free.

The short chain of slips ended there, and a brief interlude of hush returned to the dock. A dragonfly skimmed the surface, tilting each time a ripple brushed its wings. They both straightened, lifted the rod tip, and shifted back to their starting spots. The rod that had pointed skyward now bobbed in small circles above the deep green water.

「竿尖彎了。」

瑞德換了個重心，草編籃便滑動一寸，輕撞竿柄。突如其來的衝擊使纖細的竿身向前彈，浮標被猛力帶離原位。它落點偏差，隨水漂向繫船柱，拖在後面的線擦過粗繩。遠處青蛙斷斷續續地低鳴，潮濕的氣味黏在兩人衣袖上。下一瞬，粗繩的纖維迅速纏住釣線。它們開始把線繞到柱子上，每一次柔波都拉得更緊。瑞德撲身向前，把線壓在板面上，再高舉竿尖；銳利的角度解開了纏繞，讓浮標重新滑向開闊的水面。

一連串的小失誤就在此停住，短暫的靜默再次覆蓋碼頭。一隻蜻蜓貼著水面掠過，波紋擦到翅膀就讓它微微側身。他們重新站好，提起竿尖，回到最初的位置。那支先前直指天空的魚竿此刻在深綠色水面上畫出細小的圓圈。
