The rope ladder hung still, but the leaves above flickered silver as a quick breeze passed through them. Dorian knelt at the tool-hoisting point, aiming to secure a new plank along the outer branch edge. The boards had been cut yesterday, yet pale streaks already marked them where morning dew had dried. Before climbing, he and Greta had exchanged pleasantries about the mild air while counting nails beside the toolbox. Now Greta waited on the grass, rope in hand, ready to raise the first board. Cool resin softly glimmered on the rough bark. A sudden gust arrived; the bucket swung wide and tapped the trunk, forcing Dorian to lean out and steady the line. If another gust grew stronger, the bucket would slam against bark and bruise timber. He watched for a lull, nodded, and Greta hauled again, yet the wind returned just as the bucket reached the platform lip.

Dorian braced one boot against the branch junction and lifted the board clear. A tiny plush yak keyring, hidden underneath, wobbled on its chain and drew a quick grin from him. The surprise cost a heartbeat; the branch sagged, and the plank now measured two finger-widths short of the gap. He slid the board lengthwise, hoping to persuade it across, yet a knot near one end blocked contact. Choosing a different approach, he lowered his shoulders, angled the board inward, and pressed the thinner edge against softer grain. The branch lifted with the next calm moment; two careful hammer strokes drove the nail until its head shone. Below, Greta waved the rope lightly to reassure him that another board waited whenever he signaled. Behind the fence, a faded cottage roof showed through leaves, tiles streaked grey. At that hour, a weather vane above the roof rotated once, then slowed again.
