Joel dragged the plastic shovel through the sandbox, sending pale grains in a low arc. As his wrist turned for a second stroke, a line of evenly spaced dimples remained where the blade had been. Another pass produced the same rhythm, dot, gap, dot, stretching toward the wooden frame edge. The pattern stood out like beads on a necklace against the otherwise smooth surface there. Beside the box, a grey pigeon tilted its head, then pecked at the loose pile near his foot. Warm rubber under his knees compressed slightly, and the scent of sunlit timber drifted upward each time the sand shifted.

Joel had studied the strange marks long enough; curiosity tightened his shoulders, and he knelt to dig beneath them. A crust two inches down resisted the shovel, heavier and darker than the sand above. He pressed harder, but the handle slid in his sweaty palm and the wall collapsed before he could lift it clear. If the sieve had been closer, he would have shaken the grains away and seen what lay below. Instead he scooped by hand, letting the sand trickle through his fingers until a circular ridge touched his knuckles. Pressure built in his thighs as he leaned forward, and a small tremor passed into the wooden frame.

Moist granules clung like sediment along its edge, so he switched tactics and fetched a small paint brush from the abandoned castle kit. Gentle strokes cleared the ring, revealing metal shaped as a compromise between a flower and a gear. He lifted it and the unexpected weight bent his wrist. The object proved to be a candleholder, its stem fashioned into a tiny seahorse twisting toward the sky. Joel brushed sand from the grooves and placed the piece on the timber rim, already turning toward the climbing frame where the pigeon had fluttered away. As he stepped forward, one loosened candleholder ring, still buried, rocked in the damp layer and sank deeper without his notice.
