The clamp jaw squeezed around a fresh pine strip, but the frame’s last corner still gaped. Noon light slid across the studio interior, painting blue-grey bars over the worktable. Quinn had measured the slats twice for a photo from next week’s graduation ceremony, yet the joint refused to stay flush. He pressed again. A single sweet drop slipped from the small cider press parked near the pegboard; the droplet landed on the cutting mat and glimmered like a tiny harbinger. It flowed into a shallow ruler groove, lowered the wood’s friction, and the corner drifted apart. Ivan, the grey cat curled on the windowsill, lifted one ear at the faint tap of wood on wood.

Quinn wiped the juice with a rag, rotated the frame, and tightened the clamp at a sharper angle. The resistance returned. Another drop left the cider press, travelled the exact silver path, and reached the slats. This time Ivan’s tail flicked as the liquid touched the ruler edge and trickled downward. Quinn traced the miniature stream back to the press’s spout. He wedged a thin off-cut under the heavy handle, lifting the barrel just enough to halt the leak. Juice still crept along the earlier trail, but no fresh drop followed. He eased the slats together again, held them, and the glue began to bite. A narrow ribbon of cloudy juice kept creeping along the ruler’s underside toward the floorboards.
