Hana paused, then shifted closer, while her mother browsed leash packets along the silver supply rack behind her. Her goal was simple: weigh enough pellets for the sleepy hamster scheduled in the next interaction slot. When Dean stepped away, Hana tipped the metal scoop into the tall container and let brown pellets drizzle down. They crashed onto the scale pan, nudging its needle past the green comfort zone printed beneath the frosted glass. She had expected a neat mound, yet the scoop's wide lip scattered extra pieces across the steel-grey tray.

Trying to correct the weight, she lifted a second scoopful and shook it gently, but the narrow dispenser throat jammed. Pellets packed themselves in a rough hierarchy, larger ones forming a base that propped smaller grains high above the rim. She added a plastic measuring cup beneath, hoping overflow would tumble safely, yet fragments bounced and rolled over the scale edge. Several skittered onto the tile, where condensation from the aquarium aisle had begun to seep into the pale grout lines. One stray pellet rolled near a cage, and an awake hamster tried to gorge on it before a staff hand intervened. By then, the third scoop had been crammed into the mouth of the dispenser, and nothing else would move. If she had stopped after the first scoop, the tray would have stayed clean and readable.

Hana scanned the counter, spotted a long plastic feeding spoon leaning in a jar, and reached for the slim handle. She slid the spoon under the top heap and flicked out the middle cluster that had blocked the flow. The removed grains rattled into the measuring cup, light enough to disclose the red numbers glowing beneath the glass again. Freed of extra weight, the remaining pile settled evenly; the dial centred itself on the needed mark. Condensation dripped from the tank above, but the spoon's broad bowl now formed a roof, guiding drops away from the scale's foundation. Hana poured the measured pellets into a fresh paper bag, folded the top, and stepped aside for the next customer. Across the bird cages, Odette brushed seed from her sleeve while a parakeet leapt, scattering husks onto the silver floor.
