"It slipped again," Dale noted.
Pia steadied the warm book beneath the mirror, and the bright spot slid back across the chair’s curved backrest. Their aim was simple: bounce the afternoon beam through four mirrors until it reached a white card opposite. Dale’s uncle, reading beside the window, kept one hand on the curtain gap so the source line stayed narrow and bright. However, a thin paperback under the first mirror sagged, and the surface dipped a few tiny degrees. The light spot was suddenly thrown wide, striking a wooden shelf and leaving the target wall untouched. Pia slid an eraser under the sagging paperback like a small personal sacrifice, hoping the extra height would firm the angle. For a brief moment the pulse of reflected light returned, yet the sun's slow persistence soon altered the entry angle. Dale had noticed the wobble too late, and the spot drifted off the chair onto the carpet.
A warm moment later, a lazy gust slid through the open window, puffing the curtain’s vervain pattern outward like a small sail. That fabric bump nudged Dale’s elbow; the elbow tapped the table, and the first mirror rocked on its edge. The beam leapt off course, sliced across the ceiling, then spilled over spare mirrors waiting in a box by the door. Flashes darted between the polished faces, sending quick ropes of gold around the room like skipping stones. Pia crouched low, crawled to the window, and pressed masking tape across the curtain’s hem. The tape stretched tight like a lifeline, holding the restless fabric away from the mirror stands. Dale nudged the eraser wedge a single millimetre, and the travelling spot landed on the card, softer but clear. A thin ribbon of dust drifted along the restored path, crossing midair toward the card and sliding over its white surface.
