The coarse canvas of Fraser's knapsack rasped against his forearm as he swung it onto the oval meeting-room table, feeling its weight shift toward his elbow. He had planned to begin a short slide review, so he bent his knees, reached under the screen, and searched for the slim adapter that joined the laptop to the ageing projector. Only a thicket of black cables filled the tray, each one looping over the next and tugging at his sleeve when he tried to separate them. He anchored one boot against the chair frame, pulled, and watched the whole knot wobble but refuse to free the single plug he needed. A small wooden lumberjack keychain hanging from the knapsack bounced against the canvas, tapping time with each tug. After two careful trials the cord still refused to slip loose, and the projector fan kept humming without a picture.
Pearl stepped in, balancing a stack of folders against her ribs. She crouched beside Fraser, her shoulder brushing his. Together they lifted the entire knot of leads; gravity let the heaviest plug sink, and the right adapter slid clear at last. Fraser fed it into the port, but the power strip under the table already held every socket. A copier’s plug, a phone charger, even a desk fountain occupied space like hikers resting along a narrow cliff edge. Pearl traced the strip with her fingers, found the switch on a spare extension, and folded her arm to pass it under the table. The extra length arched over the carpet like a miniature fjord bridging two banks of chairs, giving just enough reach. The projector finally accepted the signal; an image burst onto the screen—snow above a seaside cliff, pine shadows lining the water. Fraser leaned forward, thumb and index finger pinching the focus wheel, and kept turning while the coastline refused to sharpen.
