The swollen yellow sponge floated, back-lit so intensely that its pores appeared as tiny silhouettes. Darla stood opposite him, her wrist dripping light-flecked water onto the shadowed table. Her chosen task waited at the plastic garden chair whose faded streaks showed summers of sun. Both teenagers eyed the sponge because its size promised fewer trips across the glare-striped patio. They had cultivated a steady rhythm earlier—dip, carry, squeeze—around the bright basin. Even so, the water level had already dropped, and thicker bubbles now cuddled Glen’s forearms whenever he reached through the overexposed surface.

Glen scooped the sponge first, but water leaked in a ribbon along the drip path, turning the ground slick and reflective. Darla tipped her head, then offered the smaller kitchen sponge whose pad had been valued for corner grime. He nodded, though the exchange instantly slowed them both and left their shadows crossing. Both stepped back and allowed the last drops to slide into pooled darkness below the table. A tiny marble had hidden deep inside the torn pad throughout the long afternoon. 他們默契地換位，影子隨之滑動。達拉抬高手肘抱著鼓脹海綿，減少閃亮水痕；格倫用較硬的刷面擦去因乾光顯出的條紋。雖然桶水混濁，仍映出兩人剪影，水量足夠最後一次沖洗。椅面在直射光下終於發亮，幾乎看不見痕跡。旁邊的庭院磚只剩細細暗線，早前積水已散。兩人後退，讓最後幾滴水滑入桌下暗窪。整個下午躲在破刷面深處的小彈珠終於現身；它滾上被陽光照著的椅扶手停下，玻璃芯閃出靜靜的彩虹光帶。
