English Original
Rafe nudged the wicker basket lid upright, letting its curved shadow fall across the blue-grey squares of the blanket. He planned to deliver a sandwich to each paper plate, yet space already disappeared under plastic cups and a silver thermos. A gust rolled downhill; napkins fluttered like pale flags and one skimmed beyond the wind-side edge toward the grass border. Rafe lunged, pinched the drifting sheet, and returned it before ants exploring the slope discovered the breadcrumb mantle spread around. To pin everything, he laid the thermos across the napkin stack, its reflective side facing the tree-shade zone for extra coolness. If the wind grew stronger, he would lose the napkin again, so he kept one hand ready beside the pile. Meanwhile, his elbow nudged a grape, and the fruit rolled along the central ridge until it halted at the downhill corner.
Another sharper breeze arrived, lifting the napkin again and startling a line of black ants crossing the grass border. The scattered insects hurried over Maren’s shoe, and their sudden motion drew a sparrow that plunged beside a fresh oak bud. Its claws shook the twig; three acorns loosened and bounced down the slope, drumming softly against the blanket’s downhill corner. Remembering the earlier slip, Rafe copied his first fix but slid a flat stone under the thermos for steadier pressure. That small height change pressed the shiny cylinder more evenly, and the stubborn napkin lay still despite two follow-up gusts.
Maren then lowered the basket lid halfway, turning it into a shield that blocked the direct flow of air toward their plates. High above, cloud strips slid across a steel-grey sky, and cool light flickered on the grass between noisy leaves. Near the grass border, a grey squirrel grabbed an acorn and darted toward the hedge, its tail drawing silver arcs.
Translation
