Kay balanced a batch of plastic sandwich boxes near the uphill edge, but each box slid a finger-width downhill whenever the blanket rippled. The heavy steel thermos, placed last, rolled sideways, nudged a paper plate, and scattered carrot sticks across the centre flat. Kay had tried to wedge the thermos against the basket, yet the buried ridge under the cloth steered the cylinder like a slow wheel. A corner of the blanket had been freed by the gust, so the insect’s six legs swayed as if riding a tiny trampoline. If the thermos had been lighter, it would have bounced farther. Kay tapped two knuckles on the wicker rim—knock on wood—when the wind paused, then reached for an ink pen that had drifted from Griffon’s open notebook.

Before Kay could rescue the wandering pen, another puff lifted a napkin and folded it over the insect. Both friends lunged; Griffon chased the napkin, while Kay pressed his elbows into the cloth to keep balance. As the napkin fluttered away, the insect hung below it, revealing a stick-thin body almost the length of Kay’s thumb. What first looked like a harmless passenger was really a walking stick, its grip stronger than the fabric’s weave. A thought flickered: the very weight and roundness that had caused trouble could help. Kay rolled the stubborn thermos along the blanket until it rested across the loose wind-side edge; its mass pinned the cloth, and the next gust slipped over without lifting anything. The walking stick now climbed onto the thermos, hind legs flexing like narrow springs.

At the same hour, two cyclists on the park path leaned into the same breeze, their jackets snapping behind them. Kay lowered a fingertip toward the walking stick insect and guided it onto the cool grass.
