Concord grape skins on Odette’s napkin released a sharp, fruity smell the moment she stepped beneath the outdoor chalkboard’s shallow awning. She had arranged a couple of long chalk sticks on the wooden ledge, hoping to draw one sweeping picture that filled both the dry upper panel and the damp lower half. The first pale line broke apart where drizzle still clung to the exposed surface; moisture turned the stroke into a blurred ribbon. Odette wiped at the smear, but the felt eraser absorbed water and returned a darker stain. A faint glimmer under the shelter light marked every failure, while the wetness that blocked her progress grew wider with each pass.
A hard swipe raised a cloud of dust, and the drifting powder pricked the nose of a terrier tied to a nearby bench. Its sudden sneeze startled a sparrow perched on the board’s overhang; the bird burst away in a miniature whirlwind, its wings striking the ledge so that several sticks were being nudged toward the puddle below. Two broke on impact, their violet cores dissolving into tinted water. Odette caught one damp half before it vanished, noticing the paste that formed where chalk met rain. The same wetness that had ruined her line could now blend colours smoothly. She pressed the soaked felt across the lower panel, then swept the soft paste upward, letting the smear rise like twisting air. Dusty cheers from nearby children rose, brief as euphoria released into open space, while the terrier settled beside her shoe, nose still twitching. With each pass, weight from fresh strokes anchored the picture, and the upper section accepted sharper accents, giving the whole scene a quiet sense of concord between storm and calm. When the final violet stub slid from her fingers, it traced one last moving arc toward the drying edge of the board.
