A faint creak slipped from the spring clip when Iris tilted the wooden board against the porch railings. Pigment above the clip had already lightened to dusty gold, yet below, a glossy caramel wash still shimmered. Otto swirled a round brush in the plastic cup; cloudy rinse water echoed the motion with soft, widening rings. He paused to contemplate the advancing drying line; every second tightened the space still open for smooth colour. Trying to rinse the bristles again, he lifted them, but brown streaks bled onto the paper, spoiling the pale curve. The cup’s murk, thick with stray ochre, behaved like tiny larvae drifting just beneath the surface. Each time he lifted the brush, the coloured film slid back into the hairs again. A grocery bag full of peaches rested near Iris’s ankle, its crinkled edge catching flecks of sun between strokes. Several wells on the palette had been emptied by earlier mixes, leaving only a thin crust of violet.
A warm breeze slipped under the porch roof, pushing the lower right corner toward dryness faster than the left. Skepticism floated between them like quiet dust; using dirty water felt risky, yet fetching fresh water meant losing precious moments. The standard paradigm—clean brush, clear rinse, then colour—no longer matched the race against the moving boundary. Otto exchanged a glance with Iris and kept the brush inside the cup, watching swirling ochre soften to a mellow honey tone. The very cloudiness that had ruined the earlier stroke now offered an even wash, already diluted and ready. He lifted the dripping brush and slowly swept it across the wide, wet frontier surface. The tinted water quietly slid outward and filled the gap without leaving hard edges behind. Where the breeze had tried to hurry the paper toward dull flatness, the shared cup answered with one broad, glowing band. A lone droplet leapt from the ferrule, landed higher on the dry sky area, and blossomed into a pale bird silhouette. Iris leaned closer and traced the tiny bird outline with a clean liner brush carefully.
