A neat gap marked the chalk ledge, the thick white stick missing between two pink fragments and grey dust. Griffon brushed the ledge with his palm, then crouched, searching the pavement where puddles mirrored the dim underside of the awning. He planned to draw a tall rocket rising beyond the sharp shadow line that split the board into light and gloom. Rain drummed a hollow beat on canvas above, and thin drops turned the lower surface slick, making colours dissolve into streaks. He tried working only in the sheltered upper half, stretching on tiptoe, yet space forced the rocket into a squat outline. Each hidden bolt interrupted his strokes, leaving blank dots that broke the neat sequence of cabin windows meant to climb upward. Grit chalk coated his fingertips, and a twinge ran through his wrist after several attempts failed to smooth those gaps.
A brief lull in the drizzle brightened the lower board, and Zelda paused her own sketch of clouds on the far side. A sudden breeze swirled the dust, and the yellow stick rolled off the ledge before plopping into a shallow puddle. Colour choices shrank, the friends rearranged plans; Zelda offered space under her half while Griffon crouched to work on the drying surface. They drew in a loose relay; her bright clouds marked the upper sky, his white exhaust filled the damp ground-level strip. When drizzle returned, they switched again, chalk moving between hands like a baton, keeping lines alive before moisture blurred them. By sunset, a full scene had been assembled; rocket, clouds, and shimmering trail crossed the board’s light-shadow boundary. While Griffon stooped to return the remaining chalk, Zelda waved toward the playground, and both stepped away from the board. Near the curb, yellow pigment drifted through the puddle and slid toward a drain, leaving pale whorls that slowly widened.
Translation
