"The thermos is slipping!" Hazel called.
Blythe lunged, yet her palm touched only the steel-grey cylinder as it rolled over a faint ridge under the chequered cloth. The slope carried the thermos through the centre flat, where it nudged a plastic tub; the loosened lid spun open, and pale pasta spiralled out like a tiny violet sea on the blanket. A gust arrived, lifting the wind-side edge; silky napkins flapped upward, coins from Blythe’s pocket— a tidy sum in small change— rattled across the silver-flecked surface, and round grapes followed the thermos toward the downhill corner. Hazel had tried to stand the flask upright twice, yet its polished curve refused to grip. The blanket had been pinned by stones earlier, but one rock tipped aside, and the unchecked sway of fabric threatened to toss more food onto the grass.
Another breath of air stooped the tree-shade zone, darkening half the cloth while sunlight behind them smeared a brilliant sunset across distant rooftops. Hazel knelt, fingers tracing the cool cylinder; the same weight that caused the spill pressed firmly onto her knuckles. If the thermos had been square, it would have stayed where she first placed it. She slid the flask sideways, letting the cloth wrap half around its length; the heavy body now bridged the floating edge, and the gust that followed only tightened the fold around the metal. Coins clinked to a stop against the new barrier, grapes circled but stayed, and the napkins settled between plastic lids. Blythe exhaled through parted lips, then pressed the second tub behind the basket for extra mass. The thermos that had slipped earlier now rocked in slow, half-circle motions, pinned by its own weight against the rippling cloth.
Translation
