Lake weed, sharp and earthy, rose from the gaps between the sun-warmed planks. Glen crouched in the mid-dock shade, willow leaves above him breaking the glare into restless shapes. Faye waited at the dock end where the water turned almost black, her float already sliding like a tiny comet across the mirrored surface. The single bait tub rested near the mooring post, and bright daylight glanced off its damp rim whenever the lid shifted. Glen aimed for the willow-root water, relying on the deep shadow, while Faye planned to reach the open depth beyond the reflected peak of a far hill. Each time Glen pinched a worm, Faye’s hand hovered, counting what remained.
On his third cast, Glen’s rod stopped short; the line bowed, then sagged. A loose loop had been tightened into a bird’s-nest knot around the first guide, and every twitch pulled more silver filament into the glare. The hitch had been formed when a sudden breeze tilted the lure sideways, sending it flashing across the lake like another comet before it fell. Meanwhile, Faye’s float drifted toward the mooring post, its red tip haloed by back-lit ripples. She reeled slowly; the remaining daylight thinned under a broad sheet of nimbostratus that had been spread low after a brief cloudburst earlier. Without fresh bait, her feeding window would shrink together with the light.
Glen braced the rod against his knee, turning it so shadow covered the snarled coils, and he began easing the knot apart with careful fingernails instead of force. Faye cupped the bait tub, shielding the last three worms from harsh gleam. When the loop slackened, the filament slipped free and seemed to triumph quietly over its own maze. Faye pressed one worm along her hook, then nudged the tub toward Glen as the sun dropped behind the clouds. Glen altered his stance toward the dock-edge observation spot, while Faye cast again before the sky dimmed further. Two loose coils of line lay on the plank between their shoes, still shining with a thin film of lake water.
Translation
