Only two thin strips of honey-colored tape clung to the clear dispenser when Olive pressed it onto the oval meeting-room table. The afternoon sun painted caramel bands across the laminate surface, shining through blinds that sliced the glow into neat lanes. Warm light met her wrists while she unrolled a cylindrical poster for the lunchtime seminar. Beside the poster, a thick treatise on groundwater policy lay open, its pages already sprinkled with margin notes. She required the last tape pieces to anchor one curling corner, yet static from the board kept lifting the edge. Quinn, her companion for the talk, hummed beside the projector and adjusted the cable that had been dangling toward the power strip. A tabletop aquifer of chilled water inverted over the cooler stood nearby at the wall. Its glass belly glowed deep amber under the late afternoon lamps above the warm office air.
A sudden hiss escaped the coffee machine in the break room, and a burnt sugar smell drifted into the corridor. Olive left the table at once, picturing caramel foam sliding over plastic controls that might stain the keypad. Dark liquid had been sprayed across the tray when she arrived, so she rolled towels and pressed them against the spill. Quinn tapped the corridor wall to say the projector still blinked, yet Olive continued mopping until the towel felt heavy. She stepped back into the meeting room moments later, and the neat arrangement had shifted beyond recognition. The released poster bulged upward like a slow spring, its corner striking her cylindrical mug so water arced across the glowing tabletop. That stream reached the open treatise, weighed the dampening pages, and tugged the projector cable loose enough to dangle.
Olive braked her stride and slid a thick pad of sticky notes beneath the water ribbon, breaking its thin advance. Next, she lifted the soaked treatise upright, letting excess drops fall into an empty recycling bin that Quinn quietly held open. Intuition alone could not explain how one drop had travelled so far, yet the glimmering track across the laminate proved it had. She folded the poster edge under a paperweight, then wound the final strip of tape around the slack cable as a tether. Minutes later, amber light still washed the desk, and the emptied dispenser rocked slightly each time the ceiling vent breathed out.
Translation
