English Original
"Line's vanished; check the bricks," Petra called.
Basil braced his palm against the warm wall and leaned forward. Their adjoining squares sat shoulder-height, but the faint chalk border between green and yellow had been painted over during the first coat. Each brushstroke pulled at their wrists, and the rough brick tugged bristles sideways, robbing the strokes of unanimity where mortar dipped. A pigeon waddled across the tarp, its claws ticking against paint lids, then fluttered to a low sill above them. The bird’s sudden weight shift shook chalk dust onto Basil’s forearm. Yesterday’s mixing protocol had left the green thicker than usual, so Petra kneaded the bucket’s wooden stir stick with both hands, forearms flexing. The brick carried a quiet reputation for drinking colour dry within minutes, and the sun already pressed heat into their backs.
They engaged their narrow brushes, but the missing line forced them backward until both heels met the tarp’s wrinkled edge. Petra’s elbow bumped Basil’s as she pointed at a faint horizontal groove; Basil tapped the same spot with his stick. Consensus arrived without words: the groove would stand in for the vanished chalk. Petra crouched, calves stretching, while Basil rose on his toes, forearms taut, so their brushes met at the groove and moved apart like sliding gates. The pigeon flapped down again, landing exactly on the groove, its feet stamping a dotted trail of grey across wet paint. Petra’s shoulders lifted in a silent laugh; Basil’s knee dipped, steadying himself against the wall before the drying gradient locked the colour. An advanced passive smear had been left where the bird’s wing grazed the surface, but their fresh strokes absorbed it, hiding the mark.
By the time their sections touched the cool shadow line, the border shone even and clear. Basil stepped back, shoulder blades loosening, while Petra flexed her fingers, green specks drying on her knuckles. As they rinsed their brushes, the pigeon launched upward; a single feather twirled down and landed on the still-wet stripe, pressing a tiny white silhouette of a flying bird into the green paint.
